120 Years Later: The 1906 Earthquake in 13 Photos By Jeremy Menzies On April 18, 1906, the ground under San Francisco shook violently. A 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit at 5:12 a.m. as residents slept. The Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fires nearly destroyed the city. More than half the residents were displaced from their homes. And the transit system was devastated. In 1906, United Railroads of San Francisco ran most of the city’s transit lines. Company photographer John Henry Mentz documented the tragedy in a series of photographs. He took 14 photos on the day of the quake. And 13 of them have been preserved in the SFMTA Photo Archive collections. For the... Published 2026-04-24T00:00:00Z https://ift.tt/NFMRpzS

Transportation and San Francisco’s New Climate Action Plan

Transportation and San Francisco’s New Climate Action Plan By Andrea Buffa Biking and riding Muni are two climate-friendly ways to get around San Francisco. San Francisco has released the latest version of its Climate Action Plan. This is the first time the city’s climate plan has been updated in five years, and, as in years past, transportation is a major focus of our climate action efforts. Let’s start with the good news. From 1990 to 2022, San Francisco cut climate pollution by almost half. That’s an incredible achievement. And it happened during a time when the city’s population and economy were growing. Emissions from the transportation sector also decreased... Published 2026-04-17T00:00:00Z https://ift.tt/iMLIyGB

Handing You the Keys to a Cleaner, Greener Future in San Francisco

Handing You the Keys to a Cleaner, Greener Future in San Francisco By Nick Veronin Muni’s fleet of electric trolley buses use clean energy to move people around San Francisco. Earth Day is April 22. It’s a time to reflect on how we can live more sustainably and leave a cleaner world for the next generation. The SFMTA’s Muni fleet is the greenest fleet of any major North American transit agency. But our quest to clean up does not stop there. We are governed by California’s ambitious environmental policies. And the city of San Francisco is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. You can help the city meet this goal by choosing to walk, roll or take public...
